Il World Golf Championship è l’insieme di quattro tornei per i migliori professionisti di golf creato dalla Federazione Internazionale dei PGA Tour. I tornei del Wolrd Golf Championship fanno parte dei calendari dei più importanti tour: il PGA Tour, l’European Tour e il Japan Tour. Tutti i quattro tornei del World Golf Championship offrono un montepremi paragonabile a quello dei quattro major, infatti il WGC è considerato, per importanza e splendore, appena sotto ai quattro major, ma decisamente meglio rispetto a qualunque altro torneo.
I quattro tornei che completano il WGC sono: il World Golf Championship – Cadillac Championship, formula stroke play; World Golf Championship – Cadillac Match Play Championship, formula match play; World Golf Championship – Bridgenstone Invitational, formal stroke play e World Golf Championship – HSBC Championship, formula stroke play. I primi tre tornei sono stati creati nel 1999 anche se, il World Golf Championship – Bridgenstone Invitational è il diretto sostituto del World Series of Golf iniziato nel 1976; il World Golf Championship – Cadillac Match play ha preso il posto del Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf, la cui prima edizione risale al 1995. Il WGC – HSBC Championship invece è stato inserito in calendario dal 2009.
L’idea di creare il World Golf Championship è nata dal desiderio di creare più tornei, di importanza mondiale, che coinvolga i tour professionistici più importante oltre che ai major.
